  • Boosts collagen production to support connective tissues
  • Helps in the development and maintenance of bones, cartilage, teeth and gums

Features

You’re probably more familiar with horsetail than you think. Equisetum is the genus of reedy plants that line the edges of marshes, swamps and ditches, and are quite common everywhere, particularly in northern North America. This common reed looks a bit like a green bottle brush with brown stripes, and it bends and sways in the wind. This flexibility comes from the mineral silica, and is found in high quantities in horsetail.

Silica is an important trace element in the body, and is important for growth, strength, and management of many connective tissues. Keeping our youthful glow is all about the health and nutrition of these connective tissues. These include cartilage, ligaments, tendons, bones, teeth, nails, hair and skin. These tissues all require a different level of flexibility, strength, firmness and stability, but allow you to move gracefully without injury.

Elastin and collagen are proteins that can give those connective tissues their healthy integrity. Collagen is the most plentiful form of protein in your body, and acts like the “glue” that holds it together. Silica is required for the production of both collagen and elastin. With age, silica levels and collagen formation both decline naturally, leading to a loss of elasticity, strength, and tone throughout the body. Providing silica via horsetail provides the raw materials for a slow and steady bumping up of your body’s natural collagen production.

No more brittle or grooved nails, thinning or dull hair, and thin and saggy skin. With a little help from this marshy plant, you can support your body’s natural ability to tighten and brighten!

FAQ

Q: Is horsetail safe to take for a longer period of time?
A: Horsetail is high in an enzyme called thiaminase. It breaks down and depletes the B vitamin thiamine (vitamin B1). When overconsumed, horsetail can lead to a thiamine deficiency. Fortunately, Organika’s Silica is thiaminase-free, so no worries about depleting your B1 stores.

Q: What else do we do with silica?
A: Outside the body, silica and its minerals make up more than 90% of the earth’s crust. It’s found in high quantities in quartz, sand, glass and semiconductors. It’s an important component of your cell phone and other electronics.

Q: Why does horsetail look so different from other plants?
A: Horsetail is considered a ‘living fossil’, meaning it has evolved very little from its prehistoric relatives. Kind of like a living dinosaur, like sturgeon. A true classic! :)

Q: Can I take Silica and Collagen together? Will they be doing the same thing or competing with each other?
A: You can totally take Organika’s Silica and any of the Collagen line together. Collagen gives you a boost up, to physically provide the collagen you may be deficient in; silica provides the raw materials to help you boost up your own collagen production. It’s like the tortoise and the hare rolled into one!

Q: What’s the best dietary change I can make to help my skin, hair and nails?
A: The best thing we can do for these issues, as well as our overall health in general, is to ensure we are getting and staying hydrated. It’s going to take a lot of horsetail to make up for 4 cups of coffee each day! When we’re dehydrated, water is going to be pulled from our cells, like in our skin and hair and contribute to lines, wrinkles, thinness and brittleness. Six to ten cups of water (can include some herbal teas or fresh juices) help ensure ample water gets to all your cells and tissues, plus can flush toxins out of your body. Be mindful of your caffeine, alcohol and sugary drinks; decrease those while increasing water and see how lovely your skin can be.
